London’s second tallest building gets planning approval

London's tallest building

The Shard is currently the tallest building in Europe and one that attracts tourists to its viewing gallery each year, but it’s soon to have some competition!

1 Undershaft (which will be nicknamed The Trellis) has recently got the go ahead, this 73 story building has been given planning permission and once built, will be the second tallest building in Western Europe. This building is almost as tall as The Shard and will have a free viewing gallery for the public to visit and admire the views across London.

This new building will be built on the site of the Aviva tower which is due to be demolished to make way for the new structure. Completion is due in the 2020’s although no specific date has been released.

But what about some of the worlds ‘other’ tall buildings?

  1. Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa is the worlds tallest structure, standing at an amazing 829.8 metres. Located in Dubai, it cost 1.5 billion US dollars to build.

  1. Shanghai Tower

200m shorter than the Burj Khalifa is the Shanghai Tower which is 632 metres and unsurprisingly located in Shanghai. This amazing structure took 8 years to build and opened this year.

  1. One World Trade Center

Who could forget the horrors of 9/11. This historic building is built on the site of the twin towers and is the tallest of those rebuilt. It stands at 546 metres and opened in 2014. An iconic addition to the Skyline of New York.

  1. CTF Finance Centre

At 530 metres tall, this building is located in the Chinese city of Guangzhou. A multi use building, this sits high above the city for all to admire.

  1. Shanghai World Financial Centre

A second entry for Shanghai, the slightly smaller building stands at 492 metres and is home to a hotel, restaurants and bars. It’s a favourite place to visit for tourists in Shanghai with amazing views across the City.

There are many more amazing tall buildings across the world, each with their own individual story attached. Let’s see how 1 Undershaft sits amongst them?
